Abstract
This study examines how sixth-grade students compare fractions by analysing three key cognitive processes: magnitude processing, natural number biases, and benchmarking strategies. Using a 24-item digital assessment and a Bayesian classification approach, we identify distinct student profiles that reveal substantial individual differences hidden in whole-group analyses. The findings show that students rely on different combinations of strategies—sometimes bias-driven, sometimes magnitude-based—depending on item characteristics. This offers new insights for teaching and supporting robust fraction understanding.
